Frequently Asked Questions

How does the weather affect my jump?

Skydiving in New England, we are always monitoring weather conditions. If the clouds are too low, if it is raining, or if it is very windy, you may not be able to jump that particular day. Please call us at (978) 544-5321 before you drive out if you have questions about the weather and how it will affect your jump. Please do not assume that the weather conditions are the same here in Orange, MA, as they are where you are located. We often have a very different weather pattern than Boston, for example.

What should I wear skydiving?

For skydiving in New England, be sure to dress in weather-appropriate clothing. During warmer months, shorts and T-shirts are fine. On colder days, jeans or sweats are acceptable, and layering is highly recommended. We also provide optional jumpsuits that go over your clothes to help keep your outfit looking fresh! The most important aspect of your attire is footwear. Please wear a pair of sturdy sneakers, such as running shoes. No boots or heels of any kind.

If I have a GoPro camera or a similar small camera, am I permitted to bring this with me on my jump?

No personal cameras are permitted on your skydive due to safety reasons. There are no exceptions. The United States Parachute Association mandates that skydivers have a minimum of 200 jumps prior to taking a camera into freefall.

If you want your skydive filmed, take a look at our video packages! We have professional videographers who can capture your experience while you focus on enjoying the rush!

What should I bring to go skydiving?

We will provide everything you need for your jump, including jumpsuit, goggles, harness, etc. However, a current photo ID must be presented at the counter during check-in before you will be allowed to jump.

Do I need a reservation?

Reservations are strongly suggested in order for us to provide you with first-class service. With a reservation, we will be able to keep in touch with you about weather and anything else pertinent to your appointment. A $50 deposit per person is required in order to book. If you do not show up for your appointment without sufficient notice, your deposit will be forfeited.

What if my parachute doesn't open?
Although it is very unlikely that your main parachute will fail to open properly, it can occur. On every jump, skydivers are equipped with a main parachute as well as a reserve for backup. In addition, all of our parachute systems are equipped with an automatic activation device (or AAD) that will automatically deploy the reserve parachute if the skydiver is still in freefall at a predetermined altitude.
What if the weather forecast is bad?
Rule number one in skydiving: don’t trust the local weatherman! Forecasts are generic and apply to a wide area, so they are often inaccurate. Our staff constantly monitors multiple aviation-focused weather reports to determine to the best of our abilities whether or not we will be able to skydive. And sometimes we get it wrong, too! The best course of action is to stay in touch with us. Feel free to call the day before your jump, and even the day of, to check on weather conditions at the drop zone.
Should I tip my skydiving instructor?
Tips are certainly appreciated and welcomed, but never expected. If you feel you’ve received excellent service, instructors always appreciate the acknowledgement!
How experienced are your instructors?

All of our instructors are licensed tandem instructors through the United States Parachute Association. In order to apply for that license, a person must have completed 500 skydives and been in the sport for at least three years. Then they must pass a course designed around the safety and mechanics of tandem skydiving to earn their tandem instructor rating. Rest assured, you’re in great hands with Jumptown!

What days are you open?

During peak season, Jumptown is open seven days a week. At the beginning and end of the season, we are open Thursday through Monday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday). Please call to verify and/or check weather.

Will I need to fill out any paperwork?
All persons must sign a liability release form before receiving any training or jumping from any aircraft at Jumptown. Liability release forms will be available to sign in advance or upon arrival for your scheduled jump.
What methods of payment do you accept?
All deposits are paid online with either a credit or debit card. On the day of your jump, you may pay your remaining balance using cash or card. All card transactions will incur a 3% processing fee. We accept VISA, MasterCard, AmEx, and Discover cards. Personal checks are not accepted.
What other policies should I be aware of when reserving?

Deposit and Cancellation Policy

Full payment per person is required in order to make a reservation at Jumptown. This can either be done by calling in your credit card number or booking online.

If a person fails to show up on his reserved date, a $50 admin fee will be forfeited.

There is a $15 processing fee for bounced checks.

Rescheduling

Tandem students will be rescheduled in the event of unsuitable weather. If a student is unable to jump on the day he/she takes their training, due to weather or circumstances beyond our control, he/she will be issued a rain check to return for the jump. There are no refunds given on reservation deposits or rain checks.

DVD and/or Stills Refund

In the event of a DVD failure a refund will be made in the amount of $125. There is NO REFUND for CD-ROM of photos. Any rejumps requested due to video failure will be charged at full price.

What is the skydiving age limit?

You must be 18 years of age or older in order to make a skydive. We will verify this for every jumper at the counter using a government-issued photo ID. NO EXCEPTIONS. Unfortunately, no one under 18 can skydive, even if their parents are willing to sign a release. There is no upper age limit as long as jumpers are in good physical condition. We recommend obtaining a physician’s approval if you are over 65.

What is the weight limit?
Our weight limit for tandem skydiving and the Accelerated Freefall course is 240 pounds, and all jumpers must be height/weight proportionate. Every person skydiving will be weighed at check-in, and we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone if we feel their weight or physical condition puts them or their instructor at any additional risk.
What shape do I need to be in?

Skydiving is an active sport, and you need to be in reasonable physical condition to enjoy it. Additionally, a weight limit of 240 pounds is strictly enforced for the safety of all involved parties. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone if we feel their weight or physical condition puts them of their instructor at any additional risk.

How long will my jump take?
For a tandem skydive, plan on spending at least half the day with us. The time you booked is your arrival time, and we will get you in the air as quickly as we can from that point. For your first AFF jump, please arrive by 8 am and plan on spending the entire day with us. It may not take that long for either of those processes. Either way, the priority in this sport is safety—not time! So bring a book, toss a Frisbee, use the free WiFi, bring some snacks… But please plan on spending some time with us. Picnic tables and shaded areas are available for your use during your visit.
How does the weather affect my jump?
Skydiving in New England, we are always monitoring weather conditions as skydiving is a weather dependent sport and weather can be unpredictable. If the clouds are too low, if it is raining or it is very windy you may not be able to jump that particular day. Please call us at 978-544-5321 before you drive out if you have questions about the weather and how it will affect your jump. AFF classes will run on schedule regardless of the weather. Please do not assume if the weather is bad where you are that the conditions are the same here in Orange, MA. We often have a very different weather pattern than Boston, for example.
What's your cancellation policy?
A $50 deposit per person is required to make a reservation at Jumptown. Bookings can be made online here or by calling (978) 544-5321.

If a person fails to show up for their appointment without sufficient notice, their $50 deposit will be forfeited. If the reservation is paid in full, a $50 no-show fee will be applied.

Rescheduling
Tandem students will be rescheduled in the event of bad weather, aircraft maintenance, or other situations or events beyond our control. All payments made to Jumptown are final, and no refunds will be given in these circumstances. If classroom training and/or paperwork has been completed, it will remain valid for the rest of the season and will not need to be redone until the following calendar year.

Video/Photo Refunds
If Jumptown cannot deliver your video/photo package due to a manual or technical error, a partial or full refund may be issued, or a repeat jump may be offered at management’s discretion, depending on the circumstances.
What should I bring to go skydiving?

We will provide everything you need for your jump – jumpsuit, goggles, helmet, etc. A current photo I.D. must be presented before you will be allowed to jump.

Should I eat before I jump?

We do not recommend jumping on an empty stomach. We also do not recommend jumping on a very full stomach. If your jump is in the morning, have a light breakfast before you arrive. If your jump is in the late morning or afternoon, you may want to have some snacks on hand. This is to help keep you from getting nauseous due to the adrenaline released during the jump.

Can I bring my family and friends to watch?

Yes, please do! We welcome and encourage you to bring the whole crew. We have plenty of outdoor seating available in our dedicated spectator area, which will allow them the best views of your descent and landing. For easy identification under parachute and a next-level viewing experience, we suggest bringing a pair of binoculars!

Children are welcome but must be watched carefully and kept out of high-risk areas.

Do you have a pet policy?
We love our furry friends, but the loud noises and crowds can sometimes stress them out if they are not accustomed to being on an airport. If you must bring your pet, you must clean up after them and keep them on a leash at all times.
Please also be advised that the process will involve being outside for a few hours and take that into consideration when deciding whether to bring the animals!
Can we bring a cooler or lunch?
You are welcome to bring your own lunch or snacks. Picnic tables are available for your use.
Jumptown also sells small snacks in the office, and there are vending machines for soda, water, and sports drinks.
Can we bring alcoholic beverages to drink?
Jumptown is located on a municipal airport, and therefore the presence and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited. A violation could result in the loss of our lease at the airport, so please refrain from bringing alcohol or consuming it on property before or after your skydive.
In addition, it is illegal to skydive under the influence or within 8 hours of alcohol consumption. So please do not drink before you arrive, and allow yourself ample time to recover from the previous night’s activities. Trust us, you’ll have a much better time!

We recommend Herrick’s Tavern, just a mile down the road, for an after-jump pint!
Can we stay overnight?
Jumptown is not a public campground, and therefore we do not have hookups for RVs. However, we are a member of Harvest Hosts, so if you are a member, feel free to book a night or two with us!
Otherwise, there are three motels within a 10-minute drive from Jumptown: Executive Inn, Super 8, and Travel Inn.

We also have bunk houses available for student and licensed jumpers. Please see the Experienced Jumpers section of our website for details.
What does skydiving feel like?
There is no rollercoaster feeling when you jump out of the plane. The sensation of freefall is more like flying than falling, and it’s intensely exciting and liberating. The parachute flight can be adapted to the passenger, whether you want a slow, quiet, and inspiring view of New England from above or a speedy, twisting, thrilling descent. Either way, you’re sure to enjoy it!
Can I wear my glasses?

We definitely want you to enjoy the view! If you have contacts, we recommend wearing those instead of your glasses. However, if that is not an option, we do have goggles that will fit over most frames. It is important to note that ANYTHING you bring with you on your skydive has the potential to be lost, so please only wear them if you truly need them.

How long does skydiving last?

It will take approximately 15 minutes to climb to altitude. Then, you will freefall for about a minute, followed by a five- to six-minute parachute flight.

How fast is freefall?

The average person falls at a speed of 120 mph! The descent rate under parachute is about 1000 feet per minute. Of course, these speeds may vary depending on the weight of the jumper(s).

What is a skydiving landing like?

Most landings are quite soft, with the instructor and student sliding to a stop in a seated position. Depending on the wind, you may be asked to stand up, but that is less common, and your instructor will make that decision based on the safest option when the time comes. We offer jumpsuits that go over your clothing if you are concerned about damaging your clothing.

Can we get one video for our whole group?

While we are happy to get footage of your whole group together on the ground and in the plane, you will only see one person in the freefall portion of the video and photo package. Skydivers must exit 1000 feet away from each other to maintain a safe distance for freefall and parachute deployment, so each tandem pair must have a dedicated videographer.

How long is the training?

After filling out your paperwork, we will show you a short video (about 8 minutes) that covers what to expect on your jump and reinforces some legal aspects. In addition, you will meet with your instructor for a briefing before the jump where they will cover body position and what to do on landing. Because this is a tandem skydive, there is minimal training involved. However, it is important to follow their instructions to the best of your ability. When you do your small part, everyone gets to enjoy the skydive!

Will I be able to breathe in free-fall?

Yes, you can breathe. There’s nothing but air up there! However, because you are moving so quickly, it is important to keep your chin up so the air enters your nose instead of hitting you directly in the face. If all else fails, scream! We promise not to tell your friends, and your body will naturally breathe in afterwards.

How experienced are the instructors?

All of our instructors are licensed tandem instructors through the United States Parachute Association. In order to apply for that license, a person must have completed 500 skydives and been in the sport for at least three years. Then they must pass a course designed around the safety and mechanics of tandem skydiving to earn their tandem instructor rating. Rest assured, you’re in great hands with Jumptown!

What days do you operate?

During peak season, Jumptown is open seven days a week. At the beginning and end of the season, we are open Thursday through Monday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday). Please call to verify and/or check weather.

What altitude do you jump from?

Our exit altitude is 13,500 AGL (14,000 MSL), and we get there in 10–15 minutes in our well-maintained Texas Turbine Super Caravan!
We also occasionally offer high-altitude jumps. Contact us for more info!

Do you require experienced skydivers to jump with AAD's?

Yes. Full stop.

Do you have packers available for sport jumpers?

Yes, we do! $10 per sport pack, and our guys and gals will take great care of you!

Is camping allowed on the DZ?

Yes, it is! We have plenty of tent camping space out back. Our RV slots and hookups are typically occupied by full-season campers, but you’re welcome to inquire about any vacancies, and if you’re willing to boondock, you can park in the back without hookups.

If I'm uncurrent, do I need to make an appointment for a recurrency jump?

We don’t take official reservations for recurrency jumps, but we highly recommend that you call us and make a plan before showing up. In addition to scheduling, we can also discuss your license and jump numbers, how long of an absence you’ve taken, and what course of action we should take to get you back in the sky.
We will try to accommodate walk-ins, but we cannot guarantee it as our staff may be otherwise occupied and unable to dedicate the necessary time to your training

Are there food services available onsite?
You are welcome to bring your own lunch or snacks. Picnic tables are available for your use.
Jumptown also sells small snacks in the office, and there are vending machines for soda, water, and sports drinks.
Are pets permitted at the drop zone?

Pets are permitted, but must be leashed at all times. Pets are not permitted in the hangar.

Do you rent gear?

Yes, we have gear rental available at the rate of $34 per jump. The rental fee includes the pack job.

Do you have a gear store?

We have some supplies and accessories in stock, but we do not have a full on-site gear store. However, we maintain dealerships with all major manufacturers, so we’re happy to help you source whatever it is you need!
