"Skydiving: An Experience of a Lifetime!" It's a phrase that gets thrown around a lot in skydiving, even at our own dropzone. While it's a nice sentiment, the problem we have with it is that skydiving does not have to be a one-time thing.
Even if you don't end up falling head-over-heels for the sport (like we did, when we started, and like so many others do), skydiving is not a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If anything, it's more like an amusement park... an incredible attraction to be enjoyed again and again, year after year, even if you don't end up getting a skydiving license.
If you ask us, we'd say that skydiving is the ultimate amusement park, and here's why.
It's not just about the jump. Like an amusement park, the experience is about what happens between the rides as much as it is about the rides themselves. And you won't even have any maddeningly long lines or hoards of screaming kids to contend with. The dropzone is a great place to bring the whole family for the day, and have a great time.
Lots of folks bring all the picnic fixings--plus a pair of binoculars or two, to recline on blankets and watch the other jumpers fooling around in freefall. (They do really cool stuff up there, y'know--flying around upside-down, sitting down, streaking across the sky in wingsuits, etcetera.) Especially on summer weekends, you're welcome to stay to hang out with us after the sunset load.
Where riding a white-knuckle roller coaster is a nice thrill, it doesn't really have any lasting positive effects on the rider. A skydive, on the other hand, delivers a sense of empowerment alongside the adrenaline rush. You're a partner in your own experience on a skydive, after all--not just a piece of meat that gets strapped in and sent off. You learn about bodyflight; you learn about parachutes; you have a part, however simple, to play. When you land, knowing that you succeeded in doing so makes you feel great. You can expect to carry that pride (and marvel!) around with you for a long time.
(Pro tip: The feeling is even more powerful when shared. Skydiving is a great date idea.)
If that's not enough to get you planning repeat visits, hear this: Jumptown offers discounts for repeat flyers if they book another skydive in the same calendar year. Think of it like a maintenance program for your risk resilience--and a glorious way to mark the march of the years!
Once-in-a-lifetime? Bah humbug. Once-in-each-birthday. Once-upon-every-anniversary. Obviously on every Leap Year. And--if you're anything like us--you'll likely find yourself on a schedule of six-times-every-day-with-nice-weather.
