Do I Have What It Takes to Skydive?

Do I Have What It Takes to Skydive?

Published: July 19, 2016

Skydiving is an incredible experience. Every year, thousands of people make their first jump here in New England and there are even more jumps made by people who skydive as a hobby.

There are very few limitations on who can skydive. Here, we'll explore what it takes to skydive.

How Old Do I Need To Be To Skydive?

People of any age over 18 years can skydive here in the US under USPA (United States Parachute Association) rules.

There's no upper age limit. Provided you're in good health, you can skydive at any age over 18. In fact, we welcome skydivers well into their 90s quite frequently. Watch this skydive video of a 92-year-old woman celebrating her birthday at Jumptown.

What Health Requirements Are There?

You must meet the USPA's Basic Safety Requirements for physical fitness to skydive in this country.

This means you should be in good health and physical condition. You may not be on medication which might impair your judgment or decision making, as you obviously need to be in a position to choose to jump and understand that choice.

Skydiving is a physical sport. Even with a tandem skydive (attached to an instructor) you play an important part in the jump, especially during the landing.

Those with physical disabilities can jump, depending on the condition and circumstances. If you're unsure, get in touch and a member of our staff will be happy to advise.

I'm Scared Of Heights; Can I Jump?

Yes! Absolutely! In fact, many of our long-term skydivers started because they were scared of heights and continued because they loved it so much.

Skydiving doesn't feel like anything else you've experienced. It's hard to compare it to things like climbing a ladder or going on a roller coaster because the experience is truly unique.

The view you get when you look out of the door doesn't feel like a height typically feels. It feels more surreal, as if you're looking down at a map or toy town. Then, there's the sensation of falling; it feels far less like falling, far more like being cushioned by the air.

Even if you do feel scared, that's part of the fun! You'll love the adrenaline rush!
